OKINAWA SHORIN RYU MATSUMURA SEITO KARATE FEDERATION

Okinawan Karate or Tode (Tuide) as it was called, owes its origin to a mixture of fighting systems originating in Okinawa and the empty-handed systems of Southeast Asia and China. As Okinawa is an island, its inhabitants were mainly sailors, and consequently they were in constant contact with mainland Asia. Visiting foreign ports, they may have been impressed with local combat techniques and may have incorporated them into their own methods.
In the 14th century, there was a great impulse and interest in martial arts, even more so when King Sho Hashi of Chuzan (Okinawa) established his regime in Okinawa and banned all weapons.
A more rapid development of the Tode came in 1609 when the Satsuma Clan of Kyushu, Japan, occupied Okinawa and again prohibited the possession of weapons. Thus the Tode or Okinawa-te, as the Samurai Shimazu of Satsuma soon called it, became the Okinawan's only means of protection. Such was this atmosphere, that it sharpened the early development of Karate as an Okinawan martial art, in such a way that it allowed the people of the island to continue a guerrilla war against the Japanese Samurai, which lasted until the late 1800s.
Tode remained hidden until the early 1900s when this system was introduced in Okinawan schools in the physical education curriculum structure.

Tode (Satunuku) Sakugawa

The first master of a structured style to be called Shuri-te (Suidi) was Satunuku Sakugawa (1733 - 1815). Sakugawa can be considered the father of Okinawan Karate from the feudal age (the ancient Kingdom of the Ryu Kyu). His first instructor was an Okinawan Samurai named Peichin Takahara. Takahara was a very educated man who was responsible for drawing some of the first maps of Okinawa.
After studying under Takahara for some time, Sakugawa began studying under Kusanku who was a Chinese military attaché in Okinawa. Sakugawa is said to have moved to China with Kusanku and stayed for 6 years. Upon his return to Okinawa, Sakugawa was nominated by Takahara as "Tode" Sakugawa and continued the work of teaching Karate. Sakugawa combined Kenpo with Okinawa-te. The results were Karate Shuri-te.
Sakugawa became a famous Samurai. He was given the title of Satunku or Satonushi; these titles were awarded for services to the King of Okinawa. Sakugawa had many famous students; among them:

Chikatoshinunjo Sokon Matsumura (Machimura)
Satunuku Makabe (Mabai Changwa)
Satunuku Okuda (Bushi Okuda)
Chikatoshinunjo Matsumoto (Bushi Matsumoto)
Kumemura's Kojo (Kuninda's Kugushiku)
Eastern Yamaguchi (Bushi Sakumoto)
Usume (the old man) of Andaya (Iimundun)
Ginowan Donchi (Bo's Specialist)

Satunuku Sakugawa and Shinunjo Yara, Tanme (the Old Man) from Chatan, learned from Kusanku who had traveled to the RyuKyu Islands from China. Kusanku introduced his new Kenpo to those who knew traditional RyuKyu Karate. This is the origin of karate-do today. Sensei Sakugawa is known as the founder of Ryukyu Karate from "Medieval Times."
In 1762, Sensei Sakugawa was 29 years old, approximately 35 years before Sokon “Bushi” Matsumura was born. When Matsumoto, Makabe, and Okuda were already Bushi (Samurai), the famous Bushi, Sokon Matsumura, was just a boy of only 8 or 9 years old.

Sokon “Bushi” Matsumura

Master Sakugawa was 78 years old when Sokon Matsumura (then 14 years old) became his student. Matsumura studied Karate (Tuide) for about four years under Sakugawa. At the age of 20, Sokon Matsumura became so famous for his skill in Karate that he was christened Shuri Matsumura (Suimachimura).
At that time, there were only three methods of Karate, known as TE; Shuri (Sui), Naha (Nafa), and Tomari (Tumai). These three methods refer to the areas of Okinawa where each one came from.
Bushi Matsumura (1797-1889) quickly became a Samurai. As a result of his martial prowess, Bushi Matsumura was recruited into the service of the Sho family and was awarded the title of Satunuku, later ascending to Chikutoshi, becoming the Chief Karate Instructor of the Sho family. At some point during his career, Matsumura traveled to China sent by King Sho Ko (King of Okinawa) to train at the famous Shaolin Temple (Shorinji in Japanese). Matsumura is said to have stayed in China for many years (some say his stay was 10 years). Upon his return from China, Matsumura systematized Shurite Karate which would later be called Shorin Ryu.
Shorin Ryu is the Okinawan-Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese characters Shaolin. In both languages Shorin or Shaolin means "the Young Forest or Young Forest". Ryu means means, methods or style of learning.
The definition of Shorin Ryu Karate Do is

Shorin - the young forest
Ryu - style or method
Karate - empty hand
Do - the way, the way

Bushi Matsumura lived a long life. He fought many deadly battles and was never defeated. He was the last Okinawan Samurai to be called "Bushi." He taught many Kata that he created or learned from his teachers. His Kata include:

Passai Kata
Naihanchi Kata
Seisan Kata
Chinto Kata
Gojushiho Kata
Kusanku Kata
· Hakutsuru or the White Crane that Matsumura received from Tode Sakugawa.

Bushi Matsumura taught two types of Karate, one was the one he taught his students and the other the one he taught his relatives. The family system contains the Kata Hakutsuru as the highest Kata in the system.
Bushi Matsumura had many famous students, including:
Nabe Matsumura (Bushi Matsumura's grandson)
Yasutsune Itosu (1830 - 1915)
Chotoku Kyan (1870 - 1945)
Yasutsune Azato (? - 1915)
Kentsu Yabu
Chomo Hanagushiku (Hanashiro)
Choyu Motobu

After Bushi Matsumura's death, three of his students continued to teach the Shorin line: Yasutsune Itosu, Chotoku Kyan, and Nabe Matsumura.

Nabe Matsumura

Another lesser known student of Bushi Matsumura, who played an important role in developing modern Shorin Ryu Karate, was Nabe Matsumura. Known as Nabe No Tanme he was the grandson of Bushi Matsumura. After the death of the old "Bushi" in 1889, Nabe was assigned to continue the family system of Matsumura.

It is known that he had few students and not much is known about him. It is said that he gave some instruction to Gichin Funakoshi and also to Chosin Chibana; However, it is his nephew Hohan Soken, to whom he gave the complete secrets of the Matsumura Shorin Ryu system.
It is interesting to note that his nickname was "Old Man Nabe". He only preferred to teach the complete Shurite or Suide system to family members.
Master Nabe Matsumura began the training of his nephew Hohan Soken in 1902. Hohan Soken became the heir to his master's menkyo kaiden.

Hohan Soken

Founder of the Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito (sometimes called "Orthodox Shorin Ryu Matsumura")

One of the greatest Karateka of the 20th century, is the revered old Okinawan Grandmaster Shorin Ryu Karate, Hohan Soken. He retired from teaching in 1978 and was one of the most respected figures in Karate. In 1974, “Ripley's Believe It Or Not” recognized the maestro. Despite this fame, the story of Hohan Soken's career in Martial Arts has rarely been told. He made great contributions to Karate and Kobudo.
Hohan Soken was born on the island of Okinawa on May 25, 1889. This was the 24th year of the Meiji era; history calls this period the Meiji Restoration. It was a time of great political activity. The old Ryukyu society was completely modernizing just like in all areas of Japan. The Samurai was forced to abolish his way of life, cut his hairstyle (chonmage) and work like any other citizen, which he generally did by working in the fields as a common peasant. As if the political troubles weren't enough, the Ryukyu Islands experienced numerous natural disasters during this time. Since 1879, there have been numerous typhoons and epidemics that caused many deaths and destruction. Thus, for Hohan Soken, born into one of Okinawa's most prominent Samurai families, the future was uncertain.
As a young man, he was forced to work in the fields alongside Okinawan peasants. His uncle Nabe Matsumura, summoned him to train him in family karate, at the age of 13. Given the political situation of the country and his old social condition, he secretly practiced Okinawa Bushido, the art of the samurai. His training began in 1902, working in the fields during the day and in the dojo at night.

It was a rigorous schedule and the aim was to develop physical strength and mental discipline.
Many men coveted knowledge of the White Crane kata, including the then unknown Gichin Funakoshi. Matsumura only taught it to Soken.
Under Japanese influence, Karate in Okinawa from about 1930 underwent a certain amount of change and became more of a sport than an art. Shiai kumite was introduced, positions became longer and wider.
Japan was at war with China and many things of Chinese origin were exiled. Even in 1936, the name Karate changed its meaning from "Chinese Hand," to "Empty Hand." The Japanese were molding Karate into a sport, like Judo and Kendo.
Meanwhile, Hohan Soken was living in Argentina, so his karate did not undergo the changes that karate experienced in Okinawa. However, Hohan Soken researched his Katas and techniques, making variations where necessary.
In 1945, when he was 56 years old, he returned to Okinawa and found that Karate had undergone drastic changes. Annoyed by this, he refused to adhere to the fashionable karate associations. Soon he began to teach his style: Shorin Ryu, Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo. He continued to research Kata and sent his students to learn from another Sensei throughout Okinawa. Much of today's organized Kobudo instruction originated with Soken's efforts.
Until his retirement in 1978, he widely sought his successor to teach advanced Karate and Kobudo techniques. However, only one man, Fusei Kise, is generally acknowledged to have achieved full skill in Soken's Matsumura Seito.
The Karate Kata taught by Soken were: Hakutsuru, Naihanchi Sho Dan, Naihanchi Ni Dan, Chinto, Pinan Sho Dan, Pinan Ni Dan, Gojushiho, Kusanku, Seisan, Rohai Sho, Rohai Ni, Rohai San.
Soken is the third generation since Bushi Matsumura learned Hakutsuru. The only one who knows this technique is Fusei Kise.
He also taught Kobudo: Kama, Nunchaku, Bo, Kusari Gama, Sai, Tonfa, and Suruchin. His favorite Kobudo kata was Tsuken Bo.
It was the instrument to maintain Kobudo as an active martial art and its efforts have led to its total growth and development, freeing it from extinction.

In a recorded tape of O'Sensei's interview before his death in 1982, he detailed the following students:
Fusei Kise, as a teacher and heir to the old Matsumura Shorin Ryu Family System

Tominage
Yuichi Kuda
Chojun Makabe
Isamo Teruya
Miyahira

Grand Master
Hanshi – Sei  Fusei Kise

One of the most important students of Master Soken, is Fusei Kise. He was born on May 4, 1935. He began training Karate in 1947 with his uncle, Cho Makabe. Then he had several teachers, among them, since 1958, Hohan Soken.
He was always very consistent with the practice of martial arts. Such the case that every time a new dojo was opened, he invited the master of that dojo to face each other in hand-to-hand combat or in any way he wished. In the event that he defeated his adversary, it was shown that this art was not worthy of being taught by that person. On the other hand, if Fusei Kise was defeated, then he would recognize that he had faced a good instructor of a valid martial art. He was never defeated.
His life was very hard. His father abandoned him when he was very young and after a few years, his mother also left, being left in the care of some maternal uncles.
He had to work hard to earn a living each day.
He lived through the horrors of war as a child, spending the last days of the US invasion of Okinawa hiding in a grotto, along with other residents of his town. At one point, her uncles told her that she could not continue living with them, as there were too many of them. So he went to live with his grandmother.
After a while, her mother returned to the village, reuniting with Fusei.
He studied despite all the contingencies that he had to live, in the elementary school of his town.
He then worked as an electrician at the Kadena North American base.
On the part of the maternal line, he has an ancestral heritage in the art of kobudo.
On January 1, 1967, he passed the exam for 7th Dan under Master Hohan Soken. Shortly after he dedicated himself solely to Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate-Do.
On January 3, 1972, he qualified for Hanshi by passing the 8th Dan exam before Soken and Makabe. In 1977, he founded the Shorin Ryu Kenshin Kan Karate and Kobudo Federation.

On October 25, 1987, he was promoted to 10th Dan by Master Shigeru Tamaiya.
In 2001 the Government of Japan gave its Seal of Approval to the accuracy of Hanshi Kise's book. They have declared that he is the true heir to the Matsumura Seito Karate, passed on by Hohan Sensei. This has entered the official Government Archives, meaning that no one can dispute the Matsumura Orthodox Karate Lineage from him.
In April 2001 Fusei Kise was selected by the Japanese Parliament to receive the prestigious award for Perpetual Achievement. He met senators, other dignitaries, and Karate Grandmasters at a luncheon in Naha, Okinawa.
He renamed his Federation Okinawa Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito Federation in April 2001.
Today, Hanshi Kise travels the world teaching his art. He makes an annual trip to the United States, as well as periodic visits to Australia and Argentina, instructing students on the most important points of the Matsumura Seito.
Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo, a system of Karate that evolved from the ancient teachings of Sakugawa and Bushi Matsumura, a system carried by Fusei Kise, one of the very few Karatekas to have learned the complete secrets of Hakutsuru.
Below is a transcription of the text read by Hanshi Fusei Kise, in Argentina, at the end of his visit:
“This is the end of our practice together.
Before leaving, I wanted to say a few words about the objectives of our work.
Those who participated are aware of these objectives.
Learn what it means to have a strong and fertile mind by Karate Do
Seek and learn judgment and common sense by Karate Do
Learn the skills and techniques and make a strong body by Karate Do
I want all of you to understand what I said and each of the objectives that I mentioned.
The characteristic of Okinawan Karate and Kobudo is built on a basis that the students of this discipline practice to get body and mind, strong and capable, and also value decency and faith. Everything to enrich your personal qualities.

Students of the Kenshinkan Dojo, although the cultures and customs of Okinawa, USA, Argentina and elsewhere have their differences, our spirits are united.
We need to help each other, build a strong body, recognize the value of courtesy, and shape the mind to be strong and firm.
The discipline of Karate can be broken down into the following three parts:

Shin - Mind, heart
Gi - Skill
Tai - Body

As a karate teacher and authority figure for all of you, I want you to consider those three elements and what they mean in Karate Do. "
